About the choir
This small group of very experienced singers has been brought together for the first time for this performance. Their name is less a measure of their Director's lack of imagination than a tribute to Josquin (1450-1521) and his Missa Sine Nomine. In Renaissance times, a Mass was normally composed taking a recognisable named tune as its basis; the Sine Nomine masses (literally "without a name") dispensed with this practice leaving composers to devise their own musical material.
Martin Firth
Martin has had a varied musical career as school teacher, professional organist, choral and orchestral conductor and academic. He has conducted over twenty choirs in works including Britten’s War Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem and Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius. Equally at home with smaller forces, he has recorded for the BBC and West German Radio with chamber choirs, and conducted three televised carol services for ITV. Having recently retired as head of a university Music department, and come to live in the Peak District, he continues to give lectures and write articles - most recently for the Elgar Society.
